Board Game Play Time Estimator
Board game box times are optimistic β this calculator adjusts for your player count, experience level, and the game's actual complexity.
Pick a game from the database or enter your own box time. The estimator layers in the three factors that actually decide how long you'll be at the table: how many people are playing, how well you know the rules, and how heavy the game is.
Every result shows a realistic range, a separate setup and teardown allowance, and a per-player breakdown so you can plan your evening without overrunning into midnight.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are board game box times so inaccurate?
Publishers print the time for an experienced group that already knows the rules and plays at a brisk pace. Real tables include rules explanations, analysis paralysis, snack breaks, and players new to the game β all of which push the actual time well past the box estimate, often by 40 percent or more for heavier games.
How does player count change the play time?
Each additional player adds turns, downtime, and interaction. For strategy games we add roughly 12 percent per player above two; for light and party games the effect is smaller, around 5 percent, because turns are short and often simultaneous.
What does the experience level setting do?
A first-time group needs the rules taught and will play more slowly, so we multiply the estimate by about 1.4. Casual players who have played once or twice get a 1.2 multiplier, regular players play at the baseline, and experts who know the game inside out actually finish faster, so we apply a 0.85 multiplier.
Does the estimate include setup and teardown?
Yes. We add a separate setup and teardown allowance based on complexity β about 10 minutes for light games up to 25 minutes for very heavy games. The total figure shown combines the play time range with this allowance.
How confident is the estimate?
Confidence is highest for games pulled from our database with a known box time. It drops for manual entries and for very heavy or epic games, where group dynamics and downtime create the widest variance. The confidence badge reflects this.
Can I estimate a game that is not in your database?
Yes. Switch to manual mode, enter the box time printed on the game, and pick the complexity tier. The calculator applies the same player-count and experience adjustments to your numbers.
