Thanksgiving is the ultimate board gaming opportunity. You have a house full of people across multiple generations, a long afternoon to fill after the meal, and everyone is in a relaxed mood. The trick is picking games that work for the uncle who has not played a board game since 1995 and the teenager who would rather be on their phone.

For the Whole Family Table (6+ Players)

Codenames. Split into two teams, give one-word clues to help your team guess words on a grid. It works with any number of players, takes five minutes to teach, and generates the kind of heated debates and hilarious misunderstandings that become family legends. This is my number one Thanksgiving pick every single year.

Just One. A cooperative word game where everyone writes a one-word clue to help one player guess a mystery word. The catch: duplicate clues get eliminated. It is laugh-out-loud funny, requires zero gaming experience, and works beautifully with large groups.

For a Smaller Post-Dinner Group (3-5 Players)

Ticket to Ride. The gateway game that works every time. Collecting train cards and claiming routes is intuitive enough for anyone, and the map provides a visual focus that draws people in. Read our full review for more details.

Azul. The beautiful tiles catch people's attention immediately, and the rules take three minutes to explain. Competitive but not aggressive. Perfect for after-dinner play when you want something engaging but relaxed.

For After the Kids Go to Bed

Wavelength. A party game about guessing where a concept falls on a spectrum. "How famous is a corgi?" debates get surprisingly philosophical and always hilarious. Adults-only not because of content but because the nuanced discussions are where the fun lives.
