Best Board Games for Road Trips and Vacations

Last summer my family drove from Seattle to Yellowstone. Twelve hours in the car with two kids. The games we packed saved that road trip, no exaggeration. But not every game travels well. You need compact boxes, minimal components, and games that work without a big table. Here are the ones that make the cut every time.

No Table Needed

Palm Island. Played entirely in your hand. No table, no surface, no setup. You cycle through a deck of cards, upgrading your island village by tucking cards behind others. Perfect for the passenger seat, the airplane tray table, or a campground bench. 15 minutes per game.

Hive Pocket. Abstract strategy like chess, but played with hexagonal Bakelite tiles. No board needed, the pieces form the playing surface. Comes in a small zippered bag. Two-player only, and every game is intense. Plays in 20 minutes.

Small Box, Big Game

The Crew: Mission Deep Sea. A deck of cards and a few mission tokens. Fits in a sandwich bag. Provides 50 cooperative missions of increasing difficulty. Love Letter. Sixteen cards in a velvet pouch. Takes up zero luggage space and delivers dramatic, laugh-out-loud moments in 10-minute rounds. Plays 2-6, which covers most vacation group sizes.

Sushi Go! A tin smaller than most novels. Card drafting with adorable sushi art. Simple enough for ages 8+ and engaging enough for adults. Perfect for restaurant wait times or after-dinner play at the rental house.

Sprawlopolis. An 18-card cooperative city builder that fits in a wallet. Three random scoring conditions each game create endless variety from almost no components. My solo go-to during travel downtime.
