Dungeon Crawler Board Games: Delve Deep and Loot Everything

dungeon crawleradventurecampaigncooperativefantasy

There is a reason dungeon crawlers have been a staple of tabletop gaming since the very beginning. The fantasy of exploring dark corridors, battling monsters, leveling up your character, and finding increasingly powerful loot scratches an itch that few other genres can reach. Modern board game design has taken the dungeon crawl formula and elevated it with tighter mechanics, better storytelling, and production values that would have seemed impossible a decade ago.

Tom grew up playing HeroQuest and still has a battered copy in our closet. Rachel came to dungeon crawlers later through Gloomhaven, which remains one of the most ambitious board games ever published. Together we have explored the genre from lightweight dungeon romps to sprawling campaign experiences, and this guide distills what we have learned into actionable recommendations.

One-Session Dungeon Crawlers

Not everyone wants a fifty-hour campaign commitment. These games deliver the dungeon crawling experience in a single sitting, making them perfect for game nights where you want adventure without obligation.

Clank!

Clank combines deck building with dungeon exploration in a way that feels fresh and exciting every time. You are a thief sneaking into a dragon's lair, building your deck as you go deeper. Every card you play potentially makes noise, adding clank cubes to a bag that the dragon draws from when attacking. The push-your-luck tension of going deeper for better artifacts versus getting out alive creates incredible dramatic moments.

The beauty of Clank is how accessible it is. The deck-building mechanism is straightforward, the dungeon maps are varied and interesting, and games finish in about sixty minutes. It works brilliantly as a gateway to both deck building and dungeon crawling, and the competitive element means everyone is engaged throughout. We bring this to game night when someone says they want adventure but only has an hour.

Zombicide

Zombicide trades fantasy dungeons for zombie-infested urban landscapes, but the core loop is pure dungeon crawl: explore rooms, fight enemies, find weapons, level up. The cooperative gameplay means everyone works together against waves of increasingly dangerous zombies, and the escalating difficulty creates a satisfying tension curve that peaks in the final act of each scenario.

Edition guide: Zombicide has many editions and settings. Start with Zombicide 2nd Edition for modern rules and streamlined gameplay. If you prefer a fantasy setting, Zombicide Black Plague delivers the dungeon crawl experience with a medieval coat of paint.

Campaign Dungeon Crawlers

For players who want long-term character progression, evolving stories, and the satisfaction of a persistent world, campaign dungeon crawlers offer some of the deepest experiences in board gaming.

Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion

If you are intimidated by the full Gloomhaven experience, Jaws of the Lion is the perfect entry point. It includes a brilliant tutorial that introduces mechanics gradually over the first five scenarios, teaches itself as you play, and delivers a complete campaign in about twenty-five sessions. The tactical combat is some of the best in any board game, requiring careful hand management, positioning, and coordination between players.

Tom and Rachel played through the entire Jaws of the Lion campaign over three months of weekly sessions, and it was one of our best gaming experiences ever. The character progression feels meaningful, the scenarios present genuine tactical challenges, and the story, while simple, provides enough motivation to keep you coming back. If this is your first campaign dungeon crawler, start here.

Descent: Legends of the Dark

Descent uses a companion app to handle the dungeon master role, meaning all players get to be heroes. The app manages enemy behavior, narrative branching, and scenario setup, which dramatically reduces the overhead of running a campaign. The 3D terrain and miniatures create a visually stunning table presence, and the character upgrade system offers meaningful choices that shape how your hero plays.

Our recommendation: If you want the best overall dungeon crawl experience for two players, start with Jaws of the Lion. For groups of three to four, Descent: Legends of the Dark offers a more guided experience with better table presence. Both are excellent and you cannot go wrong with either.

Choosing Your Dungeon

The biggest decision when choosing a dungeon crawler is whether you want a one-session experience or a multi-session campaign. One-session games like Clank offer variety and convenience since you can play a different game every week. Campaign games offer depth and character investment but require consistent scheduling and the same group showing up regularly.

Consider your group's commitment level honestly. We have seen too many campaigns fizzle after three sessions because life gets in the way. If your group meets sporadically, stick with one-session dungeon crawlers and save the campaigns for a dedicated two-player or solo experience.

Storage note: Campaign dungeon crawlers are notorious for massive boxes and hundreds of components. Make sure you have storage space before committing, because these boxes are not small. Gloomhaven's box weighs nearly ten kilograms and requires significant shelf real estate.

The dungeon crawler genre continues to evolve with innovative new designs that push the boundaries of what board games can deliver. Whether you choose a quick one-session delve or commit to a months-long campaign, the thrill of kicking down that door and discovering what lurks on the other side never gets old. Grab your sword, pack your potions, and start crawling.
